Lake Maggiore is the second longest lake in Italy, after the Garda Lake, but it is the most charming. The lake is situated between Piemonte and Lombardia regions and canton Ticino (Switzerland), in a magnificent position at the feet of the alps and mount Rosa.

You can find loads of excursions throughout the valleys that lead to the lake: Val Formazza with the waterfall Toce, Val Vigezzo called also “Valley of the painters”, Val Anzasca that ends with the walser dress of Macugnaga and Valle Antrona rich of small mountain lakes.

The National Park Val Grande is the most biggest wild area of Europe.

Lake Maggiore is most known thanks to the Borromeo islands, which you can find on the lake side of Stresa. Isola Bella is famous for the Barroque palace and the beautiful terraced gardens, Isola Madre is the biggest of the three and known by her rich botanical garden with azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias and ancient trees. Isola Pescatori an ancient village still inhabited.

The near lake Orta is ideal for a lovely excursion to the little town of Orta and the island San Giulio.

Up going the lake towards the north you can find Verbania, a town full of shops and lovely botanical gardens such as Villa Taranto and Villa San Remigio.

Near the Swiss border you can find Cannobio, the first town that the northern tourists find coming through San Gottardo and San Bernardino. Cannobio has Medieval origins and, as you will see, they have managed to keep it intact. The town is a perfect start off to the Orrido of Sant'Anna and the Valle Cannobina.

For the sport lovers at Cannobio, you can find many activities: Tennis courts, bicycle and mountbike paths. On the beach you can practice water sports such as: sailing, windsurf and kitesurf.

Not to forget the golf lovers that can find in the nearby many golf courses drawn by famous architects: Golf club Patriziale of Ascona, very exclusive, Golf Gerre of Losone, new and surrounded by the nature and Golf club des Iles Borromee at Stresa. Nearby is situated Canton Ticino (the Swiss side of lake Maggiore) with her beautiful cities rich of history and culture: Ascona, famous for the Ascona Jazz Festival, Locarno rich of shops and called "old city" it is also famous for the International film Festival and the camellias Festival and at the end Bellinzona with her medieval castles. You can also do many excursions in Val Maggia, Val Verzasca and Centovalli.

Also very interesting for their Religion and artistic history are: Sacri Monti of Ghiffa, Domodossola and Orta that became part of the UNESCO in 2003.

For the shopping lovers are the markets of Cannobio on Sunday mornings and during the week at Luino and Verbania. Famous shopping centers are Fox Town at Mendrisio and Alessi at Omegna.
